About 50,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK every year. However, it’s not always easy to know if you’re at risk of the condition, because some of the symptoms can be extremely subtle.
Most people diagnosed with the cancer are older than 40 years old, with almost half of those above 75 years old.
The most common cause of lung cancer is smoking. More than 70 percent of all cases are linked to smoking.
But it can be very difficult to know if you have lung cancer, as the symptoms might be confused with something less serious.
There are 10 key signs of lung cancer that everyone should be aware of, however.
Difficulty breathing is one of the most common lung cancer symptoms, according to the Irish Cancer Society.
It’s more likely to be caused by lung cancer if it’s accompanied by a cough that won’t go away.
This cough could lead to coughing up blood, or blood-stained phlegm.
If you’re concerned about any long-term changes to your body, you should speak to a doctor.

“All these symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer, but it’s important to go to the GP and get any unusual changes checked,” said the Irish Cancer Society.
“Your family doctor (GP) will talk to you about your symptoms.
“Your GP may organise for you to have a chest X-ray, to check your lungs for any abnormal changes.
“If you notice any of the symptoms above or if you have any concerns we recommend that you speak with your GP.”

Difficulty breathing
A cough that doesn’t go away or a change in a long-term cough
Repeated chest infections that won’t go away, even after antibiotics
Feeling more tired than usual
A hoarse voice
Coughing up blood-stained phlegm
Pain in your chest, especially when you cough or breathe in
Loss of appetite/weight loss
Swelling around your face and neck
Difficulty swallowing
The best way to avoid developing lung cancer is to give up smoking, if you’re a smoker.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet could also lower your risk of the disease.
Everyone should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
It’s also absolutely crucial that you stay active, and do at least 150 minutes of exercise every week.
