High cholesterol: Warning sign of the condition found in your speech

Cholesterol is a type of blood fat which we all need. However, too much can lead to serious health problems in the future including heart attack and strokes. If your speech becomes a certain way, it could mean you’re in danger.

Heart UK said: “If your arteries become clogged up with blood fats, your blood can’t flow around your body easily.

“This can lead to a number of diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

“These diseases are known together as cardiovascular disease – cardio refers to the heart and vascular refers to the blood vessels.

“A sign of cholesterol being too high and causing a stroke is slurred speech.

“Other signs include the face drooping to one side and weakness in the arms or not being able to lift them.”

Physician Dr Victoria Smithers said: “High cholesterol is a common condition found during routine blood work.

“There are no symptoms for high LDL or low HDL cholesterol until a blockage occurs.

“Then you could have chest pain, pain in the legs or stroke symptoms like weakness, numbness, vision loss, slurred speech, etc.”

Daily exercise is important to increase the HDL cholesterol and lower LDL cholesterol.

Diet and exercise lower cholesterol by approximately 10 percent.

The Mediterranean diet meets all the criteria to help lower cholesterol and is heart healthy.

Heart UK added: “Anyone can have high cholesterol – even if you are young, slim, eat well and exercise.

“That’s because high cholesterol can be caused by different things.

“It can be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, but it can be genetic too.

“If your cholesterol is raised, there are treatments available if you need them.”chole

High cholesterol may be caused by eating lots of fatty foods, or by not doing enough exercise.

Obesity, smoking and drinking lots of alcohol all contribute to your cholesterol levels.

Medication can help to keep your cholesterol levels in check, but it’s also important to stick to a healthy diet, and to do regular exercise.

Everyone should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, as well as 150 minutes of exercise every week.
