Natural remedies to assist hair growth do exist. In particular, three oils have shown great promise in helping hair become healthier and stronger. What are they?

According to Medical News Today, bergamot oil “may help promote hair growth and a healthy scalp”.

Bergamot oil

Bergamot oil is extracted from the rinds of citrus fruit that grow on bergamot orange trees.

Researchers from the Department of Biomedical Science and Human Oncology at the University of Bari, in Italy, explored bergamot oil in detail.

They reviewed 31 studies, which consisted of 1,709 human subjects and 11 animals.

In animal models, bergamot essential oil – used daily for 20 weeks – promoted “hair growth”.

The anti-inflammatory properties of bergamot essential oil also saw a reduction in blood diastolic and systolic pressure.

In other words, the therapeutic benefit of bergamot essential oil reduced blood pressure readings.

The researchers noted bergamot oil could have “a significant effect on improving mental conditions”.

Stress is notoriously linked to hair loss, as confirmed by the Mayo Clinic.

It said: “Significant stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase.

“Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair.”

If bergamot oil can help provide therapeutic relief from stress, then it makes sense that it can help maintain strong, healthy hair.

Another oil suggested by Medical News Today to assist hair growth is jojoba oil.

Deriving from the Zizyphus jujube plant, researchers from Daegu University, in the Republic of Korea, explored its effects on hair growth.

Different concentrations of jojoba oil were applied onto the backs of mice and monitored for 21 days.

Concentrations of jojoba oil ranged from 0.1 percent, one percent to 10 percent.

At the end of the experimentation, the mice treated with 10 percent of jojoba oil had produced the longest hair (10.02mm).

“From this study, it is concluded that jojoba essential oil possesses hair growth promotion activity,” the researchers finalised.

The third essential oil recommended for hair growth by Medical News Today is peppermint oil.

Citing research from Keimyung University, in Korea, peppermint oil was found to promote hair growth more effectively than topical minoxidil.

Minoxidil is a well-known medication used in shampoos, for example, to treat hair loss.

The researchers also noted how peppermint essential oil “increased the number of hair follicles”.

Essential oils are “usually well-tolerated when diluted in a carrier oil”, such as olive oil.
