Mum-of-one, Alys Morgan, came down with unusual symptoms at the height of the pandemic. Not identifying with any of the classic signs of coronavirus, Alys mistook her symptoms for a stomach bug.

“It was almost like having travel sickness,” recalled Alys. “Or for anybody who suffers with migraine or vertigo sickness it was a bit like that.”

The 63-year-old remembered the illness beginning “slowly,” and suffering from a “burning thirst all of the time”.

Eventually, Alys began vomiting. “I would have a drink of orange juice and almost instantly I would be sick,” she said.

“By the end I couldn’t drink anything at all, not even water. That was when I realised I was really, really ill.”

Feeling so weak she “couldn’t even walk”, her husband decided to call for the ambulance.

When they arrived, the paramedics “did a few tests”. “I didn’t have much of a temperature or any of the typical symptoms of COVID-19,” she added.

Upon discovering Alys was suffering from malnutrition and dehydration, the paramedics took her to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital, in Bangor Wales.

Undergoing a routine coronavirus swab, Alys was told she had tested positive for the virus.

“I was just stunned and didn’t expect it at all,” she said. “I had none of the normal symptoms like a high temperature or a cough.”

Instead, she had an overwhelming sense of nausea that stopped her from eating or drinking.

While undergoing hospital treatment, she was given “anti-sickness” medication.

Alys was also seen by a dietician to help her regain some of the weight she had lost during her illness.

“She gave me a book and it was full of cakes and milkshakes and puddings. I’ve never had a diet like this before.

“How many times in your life are you told to put weight on?” she quipped.

Alys was also seen by a physiotherapist to help her walk again, as she had lost so much energy fighting off the virus.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognise “nausea or vomiting” as a sign of COVID-19.

Other signs of the disease (not included in the classic three) are: chills, fatigue, and body or muscle aches.

Moreover, it’s been reported by the CDC that some people with coronavirus have had a sore throat, headache or runny nose.

“The CDC will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID-19,” the organisation noted.

The three classic signs of COVID-19, pointed out by the NHS include:

  • A new, continuous cough
  • A high temperature
  • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

The national health body added: “Most people with coronavirus have at least one of these symptoms.”

Yet, this suggests that not everyone with the disease will display any of the classic symptoms.
