In the latest in his series of videos where he tries the diets that swole stars likeTom Hardy, Chris Evans and Mark Wahlberg follow when they’re preparing for big action roles, fitness YouTuber Aseel Soueid takes on the meal plan that Jake Gyllenhaal adopted while he was getting in shape to play a professional boxer in the gritty 2015 drama Southpaw.
The first meal of the day is a light one; a banana, some almonds, and a cup of black coffee, shortly followed by meal #2: an enormous sandwich consisting of six egg-whites, and a protein shake.
The carb-focused pre-workout meal is another banana, more almonds, and an apple, while the post-workout meal is light on carbs, comprising roast chicken, salad leaves, steamed broccoli, avocado, and a dash of olive oil.
The fifth meal is another simple one: two turkey patties with steamed veggies. “Ground turkey, in my opinion, always tastes better than ground beef,” says Soueid. “Anything other than just dry chicken is really good.”
He closes out the challenge with the sixth meal, another protein shake, bringing his total daily calorie intake to 2,438, split across 180 grams of carbs, 105 grams of fat, and 203 grams of protein.
“Considering [Gyllenhaal’s] body weight, body fat, training etc., that’s actually a pretty good macro and calorie range, especially for body recomposition,” he says. “It seemed like he was really slowly building muscle mass and losing body fat for five or six months straight in this role.”
