Iggy Pop, who was the frontman of the punk band The Stooges, has been in the industry for decades. Among the things that made him famous was his reckless, self-mutilating behaviour on stage, and his drug-taking rockstar lifestyle offstage. In an interview with the New Yorker, Iggy revealed the true toll of his antics. The rocker now holds a cane because his “skeleton” is his “weak area”, despite still appearing to have a muscular physique for his age. He also had Lasik eye surgery in Colombia to help his battered vision, which he told the interviewer was due to too much intravenous cocaine. Iggy also made pessimistic comments about his own ageing, suggesting he was “nearer to my expiration”. Surprisingly, his injuries are not all down to his younger, drug-fuelled life.

To the interview, Iggy wore a shoe with a platform sole to make up for a difference in the length of his legs.
One of his legs is an inch-and-a-half shorter than the other due to scoliosis, reported the Guardian.
Scoliosis refers to the sideways curvature of the spine.
Although most cases are mild, some extreme cases of scoliosis can be problematic for the sufferer’s mobility.
It may also reduce the amount of space within the chest, making it difficult for the lungs to function properly.
According to the Scoliosis Association UK, three to four children per 1000 need specialist supervision for scoliosis, which they emphasise is not a disease.
One of the most common problems for adults with Scoliosis is back pain.
Treatment is related to relieving this pain, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and ibuprofen, the NHS states.
Other options include surgeries designed to relieve the pressure on the nerve or strengthen the spine.
The common symptoms of scoliosis, aside from having one leg longer than the other like Iggy, include:
- Shoulders are uneven
- One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other
- Waist is uneven
- Hips are a different height
- One side of the rib cage is further forward than the other
- One side of the back is more prominent than the other
Researchers have not yet discovered exactly what causes common forms of scoliosis, according to the Mayo Clinic.
It is suggested that the condition is hereditary as it seems to run in families.
As scoliosis worsens, it can cause more prominent changes in the physique, which can cause mental health issues for people with it.
Individuals with scoliosis may be self-conscious about their appearance.
However, scoliosis did not stop Iggy Pop from having an unstoppable rock career.
The star has recently been rewarded with a 2022 Polar Music Prize which he will pick up in Stockholm.
He said in a video statement: “It’s a nice step for me. I respect it and I’m honoured by it. I’m looking forward to coming to Stockholm in May to receive the Polar Music Prize.”
