Whether you love or hate winter we all know that the cold and dark wreak havoc on our bodies.
From central heating drying out our skin to colds, the flu and worse – we need to take extra care of ourselves in the first few months of the year.
And, it seems there’s no place left untouched by the harsh effects of the season.
As, did you know that you can suffer from “winter vagina”.?
No, we didn’t either… eek!
According to Mary Burke, a former NHS midwife and senior clinical nurse at the London Bridge Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Clinic, women are far more likely to suffer from vaginal dryness in winter.
From November to February can be a difficult time for women’s sensitive parts – and they may need extra care.
Mary explained: "Dry autumn and winter air depletes moisture from our bodies, leaving our skin dehydrated and cracked, and our sinuses parched.
“And while it’s an issue few will want to discuss openly, our vaginas can enter ‘drought mode’ during this time, too.
“When we spend a lot of time in air conditioned rooms, or with the heating on, we’re living in air which carries very little moisture.
“And the dryness we experience can often extend to every inch of our bodies – including our most private regions."
Dryness in the vagina can cause it to feel sore and itchy and can even cause discomfort during sex.
The NHS advises women to use a vaginal moisturiser to prevent dryness in the area.
It also recommends using unperformed soap around the vagina and to avoid all douches and petroleum jelly.
If the issue is damaging your sex life, try using a water-based lubricant to help with dryness.
