Many people are eating and drinking the whole lot – unaware that the recommended healthy serving size is much less. For instance, a standard 500ml bottle of Coca-Cola – which often comes with a lunchtime sandwich meal deal – actually contains two servings. And the recommended serving size for Pringles is just 13 – bad news for people who like to munch their way through the best part of a tube.
The survey, carried out by the blog PoundToy, found that many portion sizes are much smaller than we might think.
A 200g bar of chocolate, for example, contains eight portions, yet most of us share it with one person only.
Tasty tube…but a Meanwhile a portion of Cadbury’s Giant Buttons is just 10. For Smarties, it is 16 of the small sweets.
PoundToy, which looked at labels on a range of edibles being sold in Tesco stores, says all the information is on the packets. But shoppers are either getting bamboozled by the figures or are failing to read them.
Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum campaign group, told the Express: “Updating food labels so they don’t confuse people is high on the list of Boris Johnson’s plan to fight obesity.
“But if people battling to lose weight actually read the labels we already have, their battles might be on the way to being over.
“The basic information is there but people who overeat just ignore it. Now that is depressing.”
PoundToy also found that a 55g bag of Doritos contains 1.83 portions, with the recommended amount per person being 30g.
portion is 13 Pringles For a 68g bag of Monster Munch, one portion is less than half, at 30g too.
Healthier products can also be confusing, with a 360ml bottle of Naked smoothie actually containing 2.2 portions.
For cereal, the recommended portion size is usually 30-40g – so a 500g box contains around 16 portions.
