Rachel Brosnahan Looks Like a Goth Midge Maisel at the Emmys

When we say the name Rachel Brosnahan, you probably picture the boisterous Midge from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, right? And she's wearing a skirted, pastel-pink tweed suit with brushed-out finger waves in her hair and bright red lipstick, yeah? Brosnahan embodies the character so fully that it's only natural — in fact, that's why she was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Sunday's 2020 Emmy Awards. But the actor's look for the night, with side-parted waves and edgy black eyeliner, couldn't be more opposite to Midge's.

Brosnahan's shoulder-length brown hair was side-parted and waved by hairstylist Owen Gould, who revealed to Allure exactly how he created the look. "My assumption was that being virtual, the overall style of the show would be slightly more relaxed and effortless," he explains. "We went for something glamourous but still lived-in."

Gould started by prepping Brosnahan's damp hair with Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protectant Spray and a medium-sized dollop of Style+Care Volume & Fullness Mousse before blow-drying with a round brush for volume. He then sectioned the hair and gave it a healthy spritz of Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray before taking a one-inch curling iron to each section. The size of the curling iron, he says, is the key to nailing this type of relaxed wave at home.

"A medium-sized curling iron is the perfect way to get this wave," he says. "Take small sections and leave the ends of the hair out for a more relaxed final look." As a final touch, Gould sprayed Brosnahan's Roots with the volumizing Dove Care Between Washes Brunette Dry Shampoo, which is tinted so it doesn't show residue on brown hair.

Then there's Brosnahan's makeup: fresh, dewy skin with a berry-tinted lip and a shimmery black eyeliner wing. That's all the work of makeup artist Lisa Aharon, who completed the look using Tom Ford products. It all pairs perfectly with the actor's custom-made silk pajama set (which she calls "fashion pajamas"). Brosnahan and Midge Maisel might not be the same person, but they sure do have the same luxurious taste.
