How to sleep: Do you live in the UK’s most sleep deprived town? Sleep tips revealed

Research reveals the UK’s most sleep-deprived town in the whole of the UK – is it where you’re from? And who are the runner-ups?

Health company Supplement Place analysed their own sales data alongside Google search volumes to list the top 10 most sleep-deprived cities and towns in Britain.

Collating data, the research team looked up where people have been “searching for ways to get a better night’s sleep”.

Coming in at first place for the most sleepiest town in the whole of the UK is Bolton, Greater Manchester.

Following those Mancunians in second place is the vibrant southwest city of Bristol.

Third is Leicester, then Liverpool, Nottingham and Newcastle upon Tyne – just what are these folks getting up to?

Well, clearly, they’ve been staring at their phones, looking up how to get a good night’s sleep.

Tossing and turning into the early hours is clearly a common problem for a lot of people – and the orders for sleep supplements are on the rise.

The research team took it upon themselves to rank 50 towns and cities based on the following two factors: sleep supplements and sleep searches.

They scored each place by looking at the number of orders placed for sleep supplements since 2013.

In addition, they used Google’s Keyword Planner to find the average monthly searches for the following five terms:

  • Insomnia
  • Can’t sleep
  • How to get to sleep
  • How to fall asleep fast
  • Struggling to sleep.

Both factors were considered when ranking the most sleepiest towns and cities in the UK.

So far, Bolton, Bristol, Leicester, Liverpool and Newcastle upon Tyne have made the list.

Sleep deprivation is evidently affecting the whole country – and lots and lots of people.

How can you banish those restless nights and wake up feeling refreshed instead of groggy?

Supplement Place has a few ideas, and the first one involves keeping away from the screen.

“Exposure to light limits the amount of melatonin that your brain produces,” the health company explained.

“[Melatonin] helps to regulate your sleep,” it continued. So if you’re committed to falling asleep earlier, disengage from the mobile hours before bed.

Furthermore, practise a good sleep and wake routine. Getting into a regular routine helps to “set the body clock and improve your sleep quality”.

Speaking of sleep quality, who else is feeling fizzled out? Following on from Newcastle upon Tyne, the inner city of Manchester is right up there.

Northerners may benefit from refraining from caffeine, alcohol, sugar and refined carbs before bedtime – as can the rest of the nation.

People from Belfast are next on the list. Did you know even light exercise throughout the day could prepare you for a good slumber in the evening?

The ninth most sleep deprived area in Britain is Wolverhampton, with coastal town Bournemouth making the final cut.

In order, the most sleep-deprived cities and towns in the UK are: Bolton, Bristol, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester, Belfast and Bournemouth.
