With lockdown feeling like it’s never-ending and a complete lack of distinction between the workweek and the weekend, it’s easy to veer away from a healthy routine when we’re at home 99% of the time. Workouts get skipped, too many cocktails are sipped, and you wake up on Monday not feeling like you’ve had a break at all.
Instead of thinking about what you wish you were doing, think of this time as a period to get back on track, where you can take some time for yourself and work on coming the best you. Warm Water (With or Without Lemon)
After hours (hopefully 8 or 9) of dry-fasting while sleeping, we wake up pretty dehydrated. Drinking warm water upon waking rehydrates the body, stimulates digestion, and aids the body in eliminating toxins. If you can, aim to get half a litre down and make sure to wait about an hour before eating any food – you’ve just watered down your digestive acids, making it harder to break down food. Adding fresh lemon or a Lemon and Ginger hot tea which can help improve digestion and delicious during the cooler months.
The Apple Cider Vinegar hype
The hype around apple cider vinegar has some merit however there’s only a tiny bit of evidence to support its effects on weight loss or blood sugar, however, it offers other benefits. ACV can make the gut more acidic, helping to better break down foods. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but gut health is at the core of wellness and beauty, so anything that aids in digestion is a big win. Take note: some people with gut imbalances react poorly to ACV. That’s because anything fermented, however beneficial in other ways, contains histamines. Histamines can cause brain fog, bloating, fatigue, headaches, and allergy-like symptoms. If that sounds like you, you’ll need to heal your gut first and work ACV in slowly.
Sweat it Out
Sweating is one of the greatest tools we have to improve our health. Dry Brushing
This ancient Ayurvedic practice involves literally brushing your dry skin with a stiff brush. It doesn’t sound appealing but it is so invigorating. Dry brushing is an excellent way to pump the lymphatic system, which moves toxins out of the body, and to stimulate circulation. It also has beauty benefits – it’s an easy way to slough off dead skin cells, leaving your skin nice and smooth and is considered to help reduce cellulite.
