A man fatally shot an Atlanta-area grocery store cashier after arguing with her about his face mask, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
After Victor Lee Tucker Jr., 30, argued with the cashier in the checkout line of the DeKalb County store, he left without making a purchase “but immediately returned inside. Tucker walked directly back to the cashier, pulled out a handgun and shot her,” the bureau said in a news release .
Tucker then exchanged gunfire with a member of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office who was working off-duty at the store, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Both men were wounded. Tucker was arrested by DeKalb County police as he tried to crawl out of the supermarket’s front door.
The cashier was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead. The officer and Tucker were both hospitalized and are listed in stable condition, officials said. A second cashier who was grazed by a bullet was treated at the scene.
Iowa Man Gets Prison Time for Assault in Face Mask Dispute
In another dispute over face masks that turned violent, an Iowa man who allegedly assaulted and spit on a man who asked him to adjust his mask has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Des Moines Register reported.
Shane Wayne Michael, 42, was wearing a face mask on Nov. 11 in the Vision 4 Less eyewear store in Des Moines, but his nose was exposed, the newspaper reported. Another man asked Michael to change the position of his mask, which resulted in an argument between the two of them.
The victim said Michael followed him to the parking lot, knocked him to the ground, gouged his eye, and kneed him in the genitals. The victim said that Michael coughed and spit in his face, saying, “If I have it, you have it,” the newspaper reported, citing a police report.
The victim said he bit Michael to defend himself. Michael alleged the other man was the aggressor.
Later, a jury found Michael guilty on a charge of willful injury causing serious injury.
