Grimes Reveals Her ‘Distaste’ for the Word ‘Mother’ & What Her Son Calls Her Instead

Grimes revealed that her 16-month-old son doesn’t say “mama” — instead he calls the singer by her first name, “Claire.”

“I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, artistically. Being a mother feels weird to say,” Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Bouche, told Vogue of son X Æ A-XII, whom she shares with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“For some reason, I don’t identify with that word. Which is also really weird because X, he says, ‘Claire’ but he doesn’t say, mama…like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word ‘mother.’” Grimes added that while she has respect for the meaning of the word, it personally doesn’t feel right to her. The singer spoke to the outlet in a recorded interview while dressing for the September 13 Met Gala.

We totally get that — it is strange to be identified in a brand-new way, no matter how much you wanted to become a mother. In the same way that being called a “wife” takes some getting used to. New labels can make some people feel as though they are reduced to just one part of their life.

In some ways, it’s good for a child to know their parents’ names as early as possible, in case they get lost in public. It’s also super helpful on a crowded playground for a child to yell, “Linda!” instead of “Mom” so 17 heads don’t swivel in his direction. However, calling parents by their first names could be problematic. According to the Wall Street Journal, the habit can establish a “friend” relationship without healthy boundaries.

In the end, it’s up to each family to decide what parenting style and names works best for them.
