Like the rest of your body, your penis changes quite a lot as you get older.

From slight changes to appearance, to lack of libido, there are many changes that are normal and don't require medical attention.

More often than not, this occurs because of changes in other parts of the body, such as having reduced circulation, hormonal shifts, changes in the nature of your skin or a number of other factors.

However, there are other things that can affect the urinary function of the penis, so it's important to be aware of certain changes that may warrant a chat with your doctor.

Curved penis

Having a curved penis is normally nothing to worry about, but if it suddenly changes or the curve is more severe than normal, it's a good idea to get it checked out.

Peyronie’s Diseaseis a disorder in which scar, called plaque, forms under the skin of the penis.

“The plaque builds up inside the penis, in the thick elastic membrane called the tunica albuginea,” explains the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease.

The health site continued: “As it develops, the plaque pulls on the surrounding tissues and causes the penis to curve or bend, usually during an erection

“Curves in the penis can make erections painful and may make sexual intercourse painful, difficult or impossible.”

Tightness

If the head of your penis is a little tighter than normal, it could signal lichen sclerosus, a skin condition that causes itchy white patches on the genitals, or other parts of the body, according to the NHS.

Other symptoms accompanying this condition include whitish spots, itching, irritation and pain during sex.

Lichen sclerosus is a long-term skin condition which mostly affects the genital and anal areas.

“It causes your affected skin to become thin, white, and wrinkly,” added Cedars Sinai.

“It is due to inflammation and other skin changes in the affected area.”

Patchiness

The skin surrounding the penis may go through some changes over time which can be attributed to a number of less serious reasons.

Noticing a reddish, velvety patch of skin on the shaft of your penis, however, could be something far more serious.

Dr Ryan Terlecki explains if the patch isn’t sensitive or painful and if you haven't had sex recently, the red patch could be a sign of penile cancer.

Other signs of penile cancer may include an area of skin becoming thicker, changes in skin colour, a lump, small crusty bumps, flat bluish-brown growths, smelly discharge or bleeding under the foreskin.

Blood

If you go to the toilet and spot blood in your urine, it could be a sign of something serious.

From kidney stones to bladder and prostate cancer – blood in your urine should certainly spark cause for concern and you should speak to your GP immediately.

It's also important to note that if you notice a small patch of blood in your underwear you should check your scrotum and shaft for little cherry or blue-coloured spots as this could indicate angiokeratomas. This is a condition where small, dark spots start to appear on the skin.

As always, its best to further discuss the possible causes of any of these symptoms with your doctor.
